Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate or sometimes opposite. Surfaces with punctate glands or secretory canals. Margins entire to serrate and with albuminous marginal glands. Pinnately veined. Petiolate or rarely sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in terminal or axillary, paniculate, racemose, umbellate, or fasciculate inflorescences, bracteate, but bracteoles absent. Flowers small, usually bisexual (perfect). Calyx (4)5(6)-lobed, usually deeply so, the lobes dextrorsely imbricate in bud, glandular punctate. Corolla (4)5(6)-lobed, usually deeply so, the lobes dextrorsely and narrowly imbricate. Stamens distinct or adnate to corolla near base, opposite the petals; anthers dithecal, introrse. Ovary superior, 3–5(6)-carpellate, 1-celled; ovules 3–12 arranged in several rows; style slender, elongate, terminal; stigma slender, elongate, apiculate.

Fruit: Drupes often subglobose; endocarp crustaceous; the style base persistent or caducous. Seeds 1 per fruit; small; dark colored; subglobose; usually not excavated at base.
